Housing Market Gini Coefficient

How concentrated housing ownership is among landlords, adapted from the standard economic inequality measure.

What it would measure

A closer-to-1 value would mean ownership is concentrated among a small number of large landlords; closer to 0 means it's spread evenly across many small ones.

Why it's not built yet

This needs individual landlord portfolio data — how many properties each landlord owns — not just aggregate totals. The published dwelling-stock data used elsewhere on this site can't distinguish between one landlord with 500 properties and 500 landlords with one each. A source like the English Private Landlords Survey could potentially support this, but it hasn't been independently verified for this purpose yet.
