UK household size fell steadily from 2.91 people in 1971 to 2.48 by 1991 — most of the long-run shrinkage happened in those 20 years. It's been almost flat since: 2.35 in 2011, still 2.35 in 2024. Whatever's driving the current housing conversation, it isn't a recent acceleration in households getting smaller — that shift mostly happened decades ago.
The UK's 2.35 sits roughly in the middle of the range among the countries checked so far — larger than Finland (1.90, the lowest in the EU) and the Netherlands (2.12), smaller than Slovakia (3.10, the highest).
